MTA taking 'precautions' to prepare for rain, wind gusts

Jan 02, 2024

The city is expected to see some wet weather and wind in the coming days — and the MTA is taking steps to ensure New Yorkers stay safe.

Snowflakes will fall in the city for the second time in less than a week Thursday afternoon before quickly turning to rain by sunset.

The rain will linger for much of the day on Friday. With wind gusts on tap, the MTA will ban empty tractor trailers and trucks from its bridges between 10 p.m. on Thursday and 2 p.m. on Friday, the agency said in a press release.

It will also shutter the Cross Bay Bridge and Marine Parkway Bridge's pedestrian walkways during those hours, with the RFK Bridge and Henry Hudson Bridge's walkways tentatively set to close as well, "depending on weather conditions," the release said.

"Bridges and Tunnels is prepared for the high winds forecasted to pass through the area today into tomorrow, which pose particular concern on bridges," MTA Bridges and Tunnels president Daniel DeCrescenzo said in a statement. "We will be closely monitoring wind speeds and conditions at our facilities and advise motorists to avoid unnecessary travel."

Metro-North trains will operate on a normal weekday schedule, but riders "should anticipate scattered delays" because of the weather, according to the release. The railroad's platforms and staircases will be salted frequently, officials said.

The weekend will be cold, and there could be snow on Sunday.
