GERMANTOWN, Tenn. - Several people are looking for a new place to live and a firefighter was hurt after a fire tore through an apartment building.
The fire broke out Wednesday morning at the Fountain Square Condominiums in Germantown.
That’s near Poplar Avenue and Kirby Parkway in Germantown. We don’t know the exact number of people displaced, but Germantown fire said four units have fire and water damage. The fire was big enough that firefighters from three cities had to battle it.
"That is the worst fire I have seen in seven and a half, eight years,” said Richard Hillhouse, Neighbor. Richard Hillhouse woke up Wednesday morning to the sound of Germantown firetrucks and the site of flames spreading through his neighbors apartments.
"It woke me up about 10:30. I knew something was going on. I got up, got dressed, came out here,” said Hillhouse.
Germantown Fire Chief Eric Grizzard said no tenants were injured, but a firefighter suffered minor injuries fighting the blaze.
"There was heavy fire conditions and heavy smoke conditions. It made visibility challenging on arrival, and what they had to do was go in and dig it out through the ceiling and the roof and various layers of sheet rock and find the root of the fire," said Grizzard.
Chief Grizzard said firefighters battled the flames for an hour. Now, the department is working with the property manager to find the victims somewhere to stay.
"Luckily, they detained it and what caused it, they will investigate and go from there,” said Hillhouse.
The chief said they have a good idea what caused the fire, but will not release that information until the investigation is complete.
